Synopsis
Vera's name is struck from House Ashford's grand pairing so a fake daughter can take the heir. Instead of pleading, Vera publicly agrees to wed Alaric, the city's crippled and feral Black Lion, and is sent with him to the desolate Grey House.
There she learns that Alaric's beast is held down by poison from his own family, and her hidden skill as an apothecary becomes the key to freeing him. As her abusers draft a decree to reduce her to a maid, Vera works on the antidote while Alaric's beast stirs awake. The setup pits a cast-out healer against the house that discarded her.
