Synopsis
In early 20th-century England, Cassian Black, a barrister and heir to a Yorkshire estate, is jailed for murder. His mother arranges for widow Ella Thorne to conceive an heir with him to save the family fortune. Cassian refuses to involve her in his disgrace and injures his own hand. Moved by his decency, Ella chooses to go through with the agreement.
After his release, Cassian watches over Ella's bakery and shields her ailing mother-in-law and twin children. Family resistance, aristocratic hostility, abducted children and a forced marriage press in on them.
